Plot:

Lily Mars (garland) is a young girl from a small town who is absolutley stage struck. When she hears that one of Broadways biggest producers John Thornway (Heflin) is going to be in town she trys to get an audition with him. After stealing Thornways script for his new play, Lily calls him and tells him it's at her house. So she got him to come to her house to get back his play. While he is there she auditions for him and is in his words "...terrible!!!" Lily who does'nt give up easily goes to New York to get a job in Thornways plays. While she is there John Thornway falls in love with her. Lily who has loved him all the time can't believe it! Then to top all that off, the leading lady of the play (Eggerth) leaves the play because of an argument she had with Thornway. When Lily finds out that she can do the part she is thrilled! She calls her mother and tells her. Her mother is just as excited as Lily is. Acting however, as Lily finds out, is not in the least bit easy. It is hard and Lily is not in the leat bit good at it. In the end Isabel comes back and John gives her back the part. He gently tells Lily that she just isn't cut out to do this play, he tells her that in a little while she will be a great broadway star, but for now she just needs more practice. Lily is upset, and she leaves the theatre without any promise of coming back. However, Lily does end up coming back and playing her part as a chamber maid. At the end of the movie Lily is starring in John Thornways broadway musical, "Where There's Music."
