Plot:
A young Irish couple who are in love get married. The girls father (Charles Winninger)who was against the marriage in the first place disownes his son-in-law Jerry Kelly,(George Murphy)who has stolen his daughter Nellie (Judy Garland)away from him.

Jerry and Nellie move from Ireland to America. Mike Noonan comes along after his daughter pleads with him to do so. He ends up liking America.

Nellie, Jerry, and Mike like America so much that they become American citizens.

Jerry has decided to become a police officer, so he studies to become one, while Nellie works hard to make their little apartment a home and tries desperatly to get her father to take a job.

Then on the day that Jerry is being sworn into the police force, Nellie is in the hospital having her baby.

Jerry hears the news that her she's having the baby and right after the ceremony rushes to the hospital. By the time he gets to the hospital Nellie has delivered the baby, and the doctor has bad news for Jerry.

Jerry walks into the hospital room and softly walks over to Nellie's bedside.

Before Nellie dies, she tells Jerry that he and her father, (who still accepted Jerry,)must pull together for the baby's sake. After saying that Nellie dies. Jerry lays his head down on the bed and starts to cry. Just then Nellie's father walks into the room. Jerry looks up and looks at him, then he slowly shakes his head. Mike gets a stricken look and then he looks at Jerry with hate, then he slowly turns away.

Nellie's daughter turnes out to be the image of her mother. Mike names her Nellie after her mother. Little Nellie also trys to get her grandfather to take a job, like her mother tried to, but Mike Noonan hated working and would not hear of it. So Nellie just gave up trying and let him have his way.

At a parade that Nellie's father (who is now a captain of police) is leading, Nellie meets Dennis Fogarty (Douglas McPhail)who is stricken with Nellie. He sends Nellie flowers,a telegram, and takes her candy.Later Dennis asks Nellie to go to a party with him, Nellie is delighted and goes.

When Dennis has taken her back home from the party her grandfather, (who didn't want her going) is coming home also. He see's Nellie and Dennis, and starts yelling at Dennis and calling him names. Nellie who is humiliated, runs up to her room and falls on her bed crying. Her father then stands up to his father-in-law and tells him that he is not going to ruin Nellie's life the way he did his own daughters. Nellie sticks by her Father, and Mike gets angry and leaves.

Later when Dennis takes Nellie for a carriage ride, they see Nellie's grandfather has a job as the carriage rider. Nellie is overjoyed! Mike Noonan finally accepts Jerry Kelly, and Nellie, her father, and Dennis all take a ride in the carriage with Mike Noonan driving it.
